“Anything that will make you more comfortable will improve the likelihood of getting a good night’s sleep,” says Dr. Lawrence Epstein, a sleep expert at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
The need for a firm pillow
Sleeping on an uncomfortable pillow can not only lead to back pain, sleep deprivation and a sore neck. It can also contribute to acid reflux.
How does a high, firm pillow help to eliminate acid reflux?
“Among lifestyle changes, elevating the head to 30 degrees can be effective. I’ve had success with patients using a wedge pillow,” says Dr. James Mojica, the sleep lab director at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
It is very simple as to how the wedge pillow helps to eliminate the symptoms of acid reflux.
As we are on our backs sleeping, the acid in our stomachs can sometimes move upward into the esophagus;
especially using a standard pillow.
A wedge pillow can be used to slightly elevate the head, shoulders and the torso to help prevent this from happening.
This makes it less likely for the stomach acid to rise up into the esophagus, therefore causing much more relief.
Is it easy to use a wedge pillow?
As easy as 1 2 3.
